An Inspector Calls :: sh Literature

An Inspector CallsI liked An Inspector Calls even though it isnt the type of play Iwould usually nonplus enjoyed, because of there being only whiz scene andsmall number of characters. But it had a plot that impressed andperplexed me from start to finish with a nice twist at the end.Set at Brumley in 1912 An Inspector Calls is about a wealthy familynamed the Birlings and angiotensin-converting enzyme night that changes each and every one ofthem. A man claiming to be a police examiner investigating thesuicide of a young, working class girl, arrives at the stately home ofMr Arthur Birling. He has probing questions for each of the fivepeople dining wi clear the house and more than one person is exposed foraffecting this girls life and driving her to suicide. In this play Priestley not only aims to entertain but as with almostall of his other plays and novels has hidden meanings and messages, such as the proud arrogance and irresponsibleness of upper class, oldergeneration bureaucrats a nd their conservative views of the period, their blindness to change and their selfish, spoiled attitudes. Thisbecomes apparently clear as Priestley almost dons the part of theinspector in challenge the family one by one, as Priestleys and theinspectors views appear almost alike (Priestley being a great fighterfor the rights of the working class person). This is stated quite all the way in the inspectors closing paragraphBut remember this. One Eva Smith has gone- but there are millions andmillions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left withus, with their lives, their hopes and fears, their suffering and demote of happiness, all intertwined with our livesI also enjoyed the screenplay. I feel it was quite successful and afair interpretation of the original play. It also changed my views ofsome of the characters. I felt more sympathetic for the young EricBirling as the screenplay gave you a clearer picture of his side ofthe story and played on his vulnerability and swee t innocence. Alsothe inspector came across as more scheming and not half as democraticas in the play. I didnt particularly take to this, as one of thereasons I liked the character of the inspector is because of hispolitical and authoritative persona. The screenplay also gave the playa more si-fi/paranormal genre with the inspector disappearing intothin air at the end and his slightly more obvious ability to predictthe future.I did particularly enjoy the flashbacks to each family members firstmeeting with Eva end-to-end the screenplay.
